A Dutch-Austrian national, he directs the World Bank’s core development work, integrating efforts in equitable growth, finance and institutions, human development, infrastructure, and sustainable development. He emphasizes climate change, fragility, human capital, and debt sustainability.
He co-leads the Evolution Roadmap, which aims to increase the scale and impact of World Bank operations, incorporating sustainability, resilience, and inclusion into its poverty reduction and shared prosperity efforts. This reform solidifies the World Bank’s role as a knowledge bank on development, addressing global challenges like climate change, fragility, and health, while mobilizing private capital.
He oversees the Bank’s partnerships with the UN, international financial institutions, and bilateral partners. Additionally, he co-chairs the International Development Association (IDA) replenishment and represents the Bank in G7 and G20 meetings. He also leads the Bank’s climate engagement at annual COP convenings.
As SMD, his focus is on mobilizing knowledge, talent, partnerships, and communications to enhance the Bank’s global impact and support client countries.
